The Effect of Schooling and Ability on Achievement Test Scores

چکیده
This paper develops two methods for estimating the effect of schooling on achievement test scores that control for the endogeneity of schooling by postulating that both schooling and test scores are generated by a common unobserved latent ability. These methods are applied to data on schooling and test scores. Estimates from the two methods are in close agreement. We Þnd that the effects of schooling on test scores are roughly linear across schooling levels. The effects of schooling on measured test scores are slightly larger for lower latent ability levels. We Þnd that schooling increases the AFQT score on average between 2 and 4 percentage points, roughly twice as large as the effect claimed by Herrnstein and Murray (1994) but in agreement with estimates produced by Neal and Johnson (1996) and Winship and Korenmen (1997). We extend the previous literature by allowing us to estimate the impact of schooling on measured test scores at various quantiles of the latent ability distribution. JEL Codes: C35, C15, I21

متن کاملAge versus schooling effects on intelligence development.
The effect of formal education, as opposed to chronological age, on intelligence development has suffered from inadequate empirical investigation. Most studies of this issue have relied on natural variation in exposure to school among children of the same age, thus confounding differences in schooling with differences in other intelligence-related variables. This difficulty can be overcome by a...
متن کاملAn Economic Explanation of the Effect of Birth Order on Educational Achievement
T he relationship between birth order and child's human capital is studied in this paper. A Microeconomic model is designed to analyze the intrahousehold behavior on resource allocation and its outcomes for children. Since adding up a child changes the method of intrahousehold resource allocation, the expenditures of investment in child's human capital has been changed too. The aim o...
متن کاملCooperative and Self-regulated Learning Styles on Students’ Achievement in Biology
Cooperative learning (CL) is a learning style that refers to small, heterogeneous groups of students working together to achieve a common goal. This involves student-student interaction within small groups in a way that each group member’s success is dependent on the group’s success. Self-regulated learning (SRL) style believe on what ‘knowing’ is and how one ‘come...
متن کاملThe Effect of Explicit Consciousness-Raising of Autonomous Learning Activities on Iranian EFL Students’ Achievement Test Scores
This study set out to examine the effect of explicit consciousness-raising of autonomous learning activities on a group of students’ General English achievement test scores following a mixed methods design. At the beginning of the study, four intact classes were selected based on their availability, of which one class was assigned to the experimental group and the others to the control groups, ...
